WEEKEND REFLECTION

1 Samuel helps us to understand, not only the many events of historical Israel, but also human nature itself!

When Israel demanded a king to rule over Israel, they did so because all of the other nations had kings, and they wanted to be like them. It was a classic case of GGS (the greener grass syndrome). They looked around and believed the circumstances of those around them were better than the ones God had provided for them.

What they could not see is that they had it infinitely better than the godless nations around them. God himself ruled over them, directly through Samuel. They were God’s people. Their demand for a king and rejection of Samuel’s leadership was a rejection of God.

Let’s learn from what we can see in 1 Samuel. Specifically, let’s beware the dangers of GGS, and content ourselves in God himself.

PRAY

For the month of June 2024, we will be using meditations on Psalm 23:1-2 for our prayer guide each day.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

“The LORD” – Meditate upon to whom it is you are addressing your prayers. The LORD, the almighty, everlasting, maker, and sustainer of all creation!

“is my” – Meditate upon the truth that you can personally call upon and have loving fellowship with this great and awesome God.

“shepherd” – Meditate upon God’s loving care and grace in your life. As a shepherd cares for, protects, feeds, and guides his sheep, so your God care for you. And Christ calls himself the “Good Shepherd” who laid down his life for his sheep (John 10:11-18).

You can also take some time bring these things before the Lord.

  • Confess your sins.
  • The Lost
  • Your Needs
